Tristan and I stopped on our drive through Memphis Monday night (March 9th) and decided to check out one of the places in the Road Food book that mom lent us. The first listing was for A & R and we were in the mod for barbecue. It was right off the highway and a little hard to find.
Admittedly it wasn’t the kind of place we’d normally stop, on a street that was pretty dilapidated and it didn’t seem like the place was a big deal (no customized designs on the inside or anything) and yes- we were the only white people around. But don’t let the look on the outside fool you. Inside the place was fine and well-lit, and the staff was welcoming. The book said that was the best thing on the menu so we ordered two, fries, and drinks.
I normally hate barbecue with the coleslaw on the sandwich, but it was fantastic. I wouldn’t recommend it if you hate making a mess though! There was so much sloppy meat and slaw on the bun it was running out and through the paper it was wrapped in. We had to actually eat most of it with forks after picking up the sandwich, and I had to go to the bathroom to wash my hands. I couldn’t put it down for fear of it all running out. I don’t like to be a messy eater, but it was completely worth it. The fries weren’t anything to rave about though Tristan said his seasoned ones were really tasty (I had plain). I recommend this place to anyone wanting reasonable prices and good road barbecue. It wasn’t too far off the highway either.
